그 동안 이태리 Rock 역사를 정리 요약해 오면서 가장 어려웠던 것은 언어 전달이었다. 특집자료로 사용되어 왔었던 대부분의 자료들이 너무나도 생소한 이태리어로 되어 있었기 때문에 이것을 완벽하게 번역, 소화해낸다는 것은 불가능한 일이었다. 또한, 많은 시간과 비용 그리고 노력이 투자되었다는 것도 사실이다. 이러한 이유로 Italian Rock에 커다란 관심을 가져왔었던 가까운 일본이나 그외의 여러나라에서도 이와 같은 특집기사는 지금까지 꿈꾸지 못했었다. 아무튼, 4회 연재로써 이 특집기사를 마감하면서 이태리 Rock역사에서 결코 빼놓을 수 없는 부분을 보충하고, 그 총괄적인 역사를 살펴보기로 하겠다. Italian Progressive Rock(흔히 “Italian Rock”으로 언급되어지는)의 역사를 더듬어 보면, 그것이 얼마나 험준한 역사를 지니고 있는지 알 수 있다. 미, 영국의 Rock을 보방하면서 시작되었고, 그것이 변형되면서 이태리 인들의 기질이 담긴 Rock이 생산될 때까지 10년간의 역사에 대한 것은 Art Rock창간호에 자세히 소개된바 있으나 1950년대 후반에 대한 이야기가 많이 배제되어 있어 이 지면을 통해 잠시 그 당시의 이태리 레코드시장을 좀더 자세히 살펴보기로 한다. 이태리에 Rock’n Roll이 상륙한 것은 1956년의 일이었다. 세계 음악시장을 강타한 젊은이들의 우상 Elvis Presley의 음반들과 함게 이태리에 처음 등장한 Rock’n Roll은 이태리시장에서는 약 2년동안 그 위력을 발휘할 수 없었다. 그러나 1958년, 45RPM Single(EP)의 등장과 Juke Box의 다량보급으로 Rock’n Roll은 뒤늦게 이태리에서 붐을 맞는다. 하지만, 미국, 영국에서 일어났던 여러가지 사회, 문화적 사건들과 비교해 보면 아무일도 일어나지 않은 셈이다. 그만큼, 이태리인들은 서서히 조용하게 수동적으로 새로운 젊은 문화를 받아들였던 것이다. 이태리에서는 이 기간동안 불투명한 사회, 문화적인 양상을 보여주고 있었다. 당시, 이태리의 깐소네는 방황기를 맞고 있었기 때문에 쉽게 두가지의 형태로 분리되기 시작했다. 그 하나가 문화적인 전통과 악기를 사용하는 보컬 위주의 깐소네(전통에 반대되는 일을 하면서도 현실주의에 입각한 많은 부분을 추구했다고 마랄 수 있다)로써 대부분 무대 뒤에 대규모의 오케스트라를 동반했다. 또다른 하나는 현실주의에 부응하는 십대들 층을 겨냥한 싱어송라이터의 등장이다. 이 부류에 호응했던 젊은이들은 Rock’n Roll에 무조건 열광하는 젊은이들에 대항하는 또다른 젊은세대로써 뚜렷한 주제와 언어를 내세우는 이를 테면 지성적인 부류였다. 당시, 기하급수적으로 확장되는 음악시장도 이 두부류의 음악층을 겨낭하게 되었고 이것은 곧 상업성과 직결되었다. 그 이전 해까지 (1957년까지) 성공을 거둔 노래들은 대부분잉 번악 곡들이었고 1958년을 기점으로 노래들이 독특한 아티스트들의 개성과 직결되는 경향을 띠기 시작햇다. 또한, 레코드 발매에 있어서도 녹음방식의 혁신으로 새로운 시대를 맞고 있었다. 실질적으로 1958년 당시, 이태리의 레코드사들의 녹음 Studio는 15개로 늘어났고, 점점 증가되는 추세였다. 물론, Sanremo Festival의 성공이 음악시장을 크게 확장시켜 주었던 것도 사실이다. 한마디로 이태리 레코드 시장의 발전을 위한 주요한 해는 1958년이었다. 1958년쯤이 되어서야 결정적이고 확실한 일련의 음악들이 등장하게 되었다. 이러한 일련의 음악들은 Nilla Pizzi, Claudio Villa, Luciano Tajoli등에 의해 등장한 소위 이태리 인들의 기질이 담긴 음악들이었다. 그들은 당시 십대들이 사용하는 악기로서 노래들을 만들었다. 요컨대, 음악시장의 특이한 3가지 형태의 커다란 흐름을 정해놓았다. 첫째로 천천히 진행되긴 했지만 더 강하고 확실한 변화는 싱어송라이터들의 등장이었다. Domenico Modugno는 ‘Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu’라는 곡으로 산레모 가요제에서 우승을 했고 그의 음악은 소위 제노바풍의 노래로 분류되었다. 그와 함께 Paoli, Bindi, Tenco등이 음반시장에 등장하게 된다. 그들은 그들은 그 동안 음악에 등을 돌리고 있었던 지식인들에게 흥미를 느끼게하는 그들 자체가 지식인들에게 흥미를 느끼게하는 그들 자체가 지식인들이었다. 두번째로, 절규조로 노래하는 가수들, Toni Dallara, Betty Curtis, Joe Sentieri등의 갑작스러운 등장과 뜻하지 않았던 성공이다. 이들 가수들은 미국, 영국으로부터 불어온 새로운 록을 모델로 받아들여 좀더 느린 템포로 변화시켰다. 세번째로, 그다지 중요하지는 않지만 밀라노 출신 록커들의 탄생이다. 그들의 음악들은 풍자를 바탕으로 전개되었고 이들의 첫 출현이 세인들의 관심을 끌게 했다. Giorgio Gaber, Enzo Jannacci, Adriano Celentano와 Chigo등의 밀라노의 Rocker들이 1958년에 데뷔했다. 역시, Italian Rock 역사에 있어서 1958년은 획기적인 한해였다. 음반 판매량을 보아도 이 사실이 쉽게 입증된다. 1957년, 이태리 국내의 총 음반 판매량은 11,940,700이었는데 비해 1958년에는 16,875,200눈에 띄게 증가했다. 41%의 음반판매 증가율은 한마디로 경이적인 것이었다. 이러한 음반시장의 혁신에 가장 커다란 힘을 작용시킨 요인은 녹음 Studio에 대한 레코드회사의 정책 변화 때문이었다. Milano를 근거지로 하는 레코드사 Ricordi가 새로 생겨났으며 150번째의 음반발매를 기념하여 레코드 녹음실에 모인 대표자 Nanni Ricordi와 Franco Crepax는 다른 레코드사들이 관심을 두지 않고 있었던 새로운 음악을 추구하는 변화를 추진했다. 이러한 변화 속에서 제노바 출신의 많은 싱어송라이터와 그룹들이 활동하기 시작한다. 여기에 밀라노 출신의 록커들 Jannacci와 Giaber, 그리고 Omella Vanoni등도 합류하게 된다. 1958년에는 Adriano Celentano외에도 Mina가 Baby Cate라는 가명을 내세워 데뷔한다. 미국은 이태리 음악시장이 커질 것이라는 것을 예측하고 체계적이고 치밀한 방법으로 이태리시장을 공략하기 위해 이미 기반을 닦아 왔었다. 1953년에 RCA가 Roma에 이태리 지사를 열면서 아무런 잡음 없이 살며시 들어왔고, 1950년대가 막을 내릴 때까지 조심스럽게 음악시장을 지켜보고 있다. 1960년대 초반부터 본격적으로 싱어송라이터들을 양성하기 시작했다. 1960년대, 이태리 음악계는 모방의 시대 즉 Cover Version의 시대를 맞는다. 이때가 미,영국의 음악만이 환대 받는 이 태리 음악계의 어두운 암흑기였다. 1960년대 중반, 독창성이 배제된 모방의 시대를 거쳐 Beat 시대가 도래한다. Beat계의 우연한 성공으로 이태리 음악계는 상업적으로 커다란 힘을 얻었지만, Beat역시 Cover시대의 연장일 뿐 그들의 독창성은 역시 배제되어 있었다. Beat의 시대는 너무나 짧았고, 1960년대말 Beat의 열기가 가라 앉자마자 젊은 뮤지션들의 “우리들의 음악찾기”라는 “노래의 혁명”이 일어난다. 결국 방송가와 극장가 그리고 레코드업계의 편견을 꺽어보려는 젊은 뮤지션들의 운동은 정치와 Rock문화가 융화되는 장을 마련하게 된다. 이태리의 좌익계열은 이러한 젊은이들을 최대로 이용하려 했었고 이것으로부터 미국의 Woodstock Festival을 모델로 삼은 수많은 옥외 Festival의 개최되었다. 그리고 이러한 Festival을 발판으로 수많은 이태리 Rock그룹들이 데뷔했고, 음반을 녹음할 수 있는 기회를 얻었다. 최초의 이태리 Rock Festival은 로마에서 개최되었던 “Caracalla”이며 가장 유명했었던 Festival은 Latte E Miele가 무대 데뷔했었던 Villa Pamphilli(1972)이다. 다행스럽게도, 수많은 Festival을 통해 음악계에 혜성처럼 등장한 그룹들은 1960년대의 그룹들이 지니지 못했었던 독창성을 지니고 있었다. 그들의 음악은 미, 영국의 Rock음악에 뿌리를 두고있으면서도 이태리 특유의 향기를 가득 담고 있었다. 그것이 바로 Italian Progressive Rock이었던 것이다. 1970년대초, Italian Rock + Italian Progressive Rock의 수식이 성립될 정도로 대부분의 Rock그룹들이 실험정신과 창조력에 불타고 있었고, 수많은 Festival이 그들의 꿈을 실현시킬 수 있는 장이 되어주었다. 그러나 Mass Media는 여전히 그들을 냉대했으며, 그들 중에 행운아들만이 레코드사로부터 음반을 발표할 수 있었다. 두차례에 거러쳐 소개되었던 Festival에 관한 기사들은 이 당시의 상황을 그대로 보여주고 있다. 위에서 잠시 언급되었던 수식처럼, Italian Rock의 역사를 Italian Progressive Rock으로 간주한다면 그 역사는 매우 짧다. 그 역사는 최초의 Concept앨범을 내놓았던 New Trolls에 의해 시작되어 Progressive Rock의 마지막 유산으로 기록되는 Locanda Della Fate의 유일한 앨범으로 끝이났다라고 말할 수 있다. 즉, 그 역사는 1969년부터 1977년까지를 의미한다. 그 이전의 Beat시대와 그 이후의 신세대 시대는 질적으로나, 양적으로나 약 9년간의 이 시대와는 비교할 수 없다. 그럼, Italian Rock의 그 중요한 약 9년간의 역사를 살펴보도록 하자. Italian Rock의 가장 중대한 시기(1069~1970)는 연대별로 크게 5부분으로 나누어진다. 그 첫번째 시기는 1969년 초부터 1970년 초까지로 Beat그룹들이 Progressive Rock그룹을 변신하는 기간이었다. 즉, 이 기간은 Italian Progressive Rock의 탄생기인 것이다. 이 당시의 선두그룹들은 후에 Super Group으로 성장되는 New Trolls, Le Orme 그리고 Quelli(P.F.M.의 전신그룹)등이 있었다. 두번째 시기는 이태리 인들의 기질과 독특한 개성을 지닌 그룹들이 등장하기 시작한 시기로 1970년도 중반부터 그들의 활약이 두드러지기 시작한다. 이들의 음악은 이전의 음악들과 비교해서 보다 복잡하고 다양한 양상을 띠고 있다. 이 시기의 대표적인 그룹들은 Il Balletto Di Bronzo, Formula 3, Trip등이었다. 세번째로 분류되는 기간 1971년부터 1973년까지는 Italian Progressive Rock의 황금기로 수많은 작품들을 남기고 사라져버렸던 가장 빛나는 시기이다. 이 기간동안 가장 많은 Festival과 Concert가 개최되었으며, 레코드 발매량과 그 질에 있어서도 최고를 기록했던 기간이었다. 지금까지 명반과 걸작으로 손꼽히는 대부분의 작품들이 이 기간에 생산된 것들임을 생각할 때 이 시기가 얼마나 중요한 시기였던가를 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 이 시기가 또다른 중요성을 지니고 있다면 이때부터 Italian Rock이 세계시장으로 진출하기 시작했다는 것이다. P.F.M.이 영국과 미대륙 그리고 일본까지 알려지기 시작했으며 Le Orme와 Banco도 외국시장에 알려지기 시작했다. 항상 미, 영국의 Rock 음악만을 수입해 왔었던 이태리에서 Rock의 역수출은 커다란 의미를 부여해주었다. 그러나, 양과 질적으로 그들의 Rock음악이 미, 영국과 겨룰 수 있다는 것을 입증해주었던 반면 여전히 본국 이태리에서는 방송매체가 무관심을 보이고 있었다. 당시, 대활약했었던 그룹들은 Latte E Miele, Nuova Idea, J.E.T., Osanna, Reale Accademia Di Musica, Il Rovescio Della Medaglia, Garybaldi, Jumbo, N.T. Atomic System, metamorfosi, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Alphataurus, Circus 2000 등등이다. 이 당시의 가장 두드러진 특징은 각 그룹들의 주요멤버들의 개성이 크게 돌출되고 있다는 것이다. 괴상한 행동과 언동으로 청중을 매료시켰던 Osanna의 취주악기주자 Elio D’anna, 예수의 모습을 하고 등장한 Metamorfosi의 플륫주자이며 보컬리스트인 금발 Davide “Jimmy” Spitaleri, 그리스 출신으로 이태리에서 성공한 개성파 보컬리스트 Area의 Demetrio Stratos 등이 대표적인 개성 파들이었다. 또한, 훌륭한 Guitarist로써 Alberto Radius (Formula 3 – Il Volo)와 Nico Di Palo(New Trolls)를 탁월한 키보드주자로써 Joe Vescovi(Trip)와 Gianni Leone(Leo Nero – Il Balleto Di Bronzo)를 뛰어난 드러머로 Franz Di Cioccio(PFM)와 Nunzio Fava “Cucciolo”(Osage Tribe) 그리고 베이스 주자로 Bob Callero(Osage Tribe)와 Patrick Dijivas(PFM)를 다중악기 주자로써 Mauro Pagani(PFM)를 손꼽을 수 있다. 네번째 시기는 1974년부터 1976년까지의 시기로 수퍼그룹들이 분열되거나, 기존의 그룹들이 해산되어 탄생한 제2세대 그룹들의 활동시기이다. 1973년, 극치를 이루었던 Progressive Rock의 열풍이 서서히 가라앉은 시대이다. New Trolls의 분열로 생겨난 Ibis, Formula 3의 후신 그룹으로 탄생한 Il Volo, Garbaldi의 분신으로 탄생한 Bambibanda E Melodie등이 활약했고 Biglietto Per L’Inferno, Maxophone등과 같은 실력이 뛰어난 신진 그룹들도 상당수 눈에 띤다. 특히, 밀라노 출신의 6인조 그룹 Maxophone는 이태리 Progressive Rock의 황금기인 1973년에 결성되어 Banco와 Rocky’s Filj, Edoardo Bennato의 제작자로 알려진 Sandro colombini에 의해 발탁될 때까지 2년이라는 세월을 헛되어 보냈지만, 결국, 이태리 Rock역사에 영원히 남을 유일한 앨범을 5개월만에 완성했다. 그들의 유일한 앨범은 1975년에 발표되어 서서히 숨을 거두어 가고 있는 Italian Rock의 맥을 간신히 이어주었다. 다섯번째 시기는 1977년으로 까지 연장시켜 주었던 그룹은 바로 Locanda Delle Fate였다. 피에몬테 출신의 7인조 그룹은 원래 3인조로 출발, 3명의 멤버를 보충한후 새로운 보컬을 맞이하여 7인조라는 대규모의 그룹이 되었다. 이 그룹이 행운을 얻게 된 것은 그리스의 천재 뮤지션 Vangelis의 친형인 Niko Papathanassiou와의 만남이었다. Niko는 음반제작자로 활약하고 있었고 Locanda Delle Fate를 유망주로 발탁하여 Polydor로부터 음반제작을 의뢰, 역사에 남을 명반을 탄생시기게 된 것이다. Locanda Delle Fate의 유일한 앨범 “Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Piu(반딧불은 아마도 더 이상 서로 사랑하지 않는 것 같다.)”는 Italian Rock을 빛내주었던 마지막 반딧불이었다.

먼저 위의 내용에 대한 설명을 드리기전에 컴퓨터의 기본적인 이해가 필요합니다. 시슼템에서 묻어오는 전기적인 노이즈때문에 생기는 문제인데, 몇가지의 경우가 있습니다. 1. 메인보드와, 파워서플라이가 저가형이다. 2. amd-cpu를 사용한다. 3. os문제 내용이 좀 길어질것 같은데 1번의 경우가 일단은 가장 원인이 될수 있는 요지가 제일 많습니다. 싸다고 해서 무조건 안좋다? 이말은 아니고 오디오도 가격대가 천차만별이듯이 파워서플라이와 보드역시 가격대가 오디오 만큼은 아니지만 조금 차이가 있습니다. 그리고 안정성을 위한것이냐, 성능을 위한것이냐, pc-fi를 위한것이냐의 선택에 따라 선택해야될 품목 또한 차이가 날수 있구요. ragazzo

Wildcat - Unoffical Action UK 포크록의 역사를 되돌아 볼 때 결코 빼놓을 수 없는 그룹 Spirogyra와 Bread, Love And Dreams는 그들이 발표한 3매의 앨범이 모두 빼어난 수작이었음에도 상업적인 성공을 거두지 못하고 결국 아쉬운 작별을 고하고 만다. Spirogyra의 천재 Martin Cockerham은 그후 영영 우리의 곁을 떠나버리고 말았지만 Bread, Love And Dreams의 David Mcniven과 Angie Rew는 와신상담, 9년만에 Wildcat이란 그룹을 이끌고 우리앞에 다시 그 반가운 모습을 드러내게 된다. 하지만 여기서 그들은 그들을 알고있는 모든 이들을 경악시킨다. 그룹명에서도 그렇지만 그 음악적 방향에서도 Wildcat은 Bread, Love And Dreams와 연관지을 수 없을 만큼 판이하게 다른 모습이었다. 그들은 그들이 하고 싶은대로 그야말로 멋대로 하였다. RCA의 심벌을 조롱하듯 변형시킨 앨범 커버나 앨범 타이틀이 모두 사뭇 도전적이다. 앨범에서 제일 중요한 비중을 차지하는 톱 트랙도 장난스럽기 짝이없다. 하지만 속일수 없는 것 하나! 그것은 그들의 탁월한 감성이다. 비록 93년 들어 Whitney Houston이 라이벌 히트시킨 'I Will Always Love You'가 연상될 만큼 현대적인 냄새를 풍기기는 해도, 앨범 타이틀과는 반대로 그 내용도 보통 사람들의 평범한 일상생활을 다룬 수수한 것이며 연극적인 요소 (Bread, Love And Dreams 시절의 “Amaryllis"앨범도 에딘버러 연극제에서 테마를 따온 것이다.)를 도입, 고난도의 표현을 별다른 무리없이 자연스럽게 해내고 있다. 역시 그들은 Bread, Love And Dreams! 그 Feel이 어디 가겠는가! 그 가닥이 어디 가겠는가! David Mcniven의 작곡 솜씨는 여전한 것이고, Angie Rew의 보컬은 비록 코러스밖에 들을 수 없지만 그녀 대신 이 그룹의 리드 보컬을 떠맡은 Terry neason의 목소리는 Angie Rew보다 오히려 한술 더 뜨고 있다고나 해야 할까? ‘Leaving You'나 ’Island'등을 들을 때는 옆에 휴지통과 크리넥스를 대기시켜 놓아야 할 것이다. 우연이겠지만 동시대에 우리나라에서도 ‘마음약해서’의 Wildcat이 전성기를 구가한 바 있다. Klaatu 아트록뿐만 아니라 일반 팝 팬들에게도 널리 알려져 있는 그룹 Kaatu의 초창기 활동이 요즘 서서히 밝혀지고 있다. 그것도 다름아닌 21세기 정보 사회의 기수로 꼽히고 있는 인터넷에서이다. 웹상에 올라와 있는 이들의 베일에 가려졌던 초창기 활동에 대해서 소개할까 한다. Kaatu는 Terry Draper(vocal, keyboards, purcussion), John Woleschuk(vocal, keyboards) 그리고 D. Long(vocal, guitar)의 3인조 토론토 출신의 그룹이다. 고등학교 동창이었던 D.Long과 T.Draper는 60년대 말부터 각기 그룹을 이끌면서 연주활동을 시작했었다. Terry가 이끌었던 팀은 The Innocence Of Virgil Scott였고, The Polychromatic Experience와 Bloodstone은 Dee Long이 리드했던 그룹이었다. 이런 음악적 활동을 배경으로 이들은 70년대로 접어들면서 J.Woloschuk을 맞이해 Klaatu라는 이름의 그룹을 결성했다. Klaatu는 1951년 공개되었던 공상과학 영화인 “The Day The Earth Stood Still"에 등장했던 우주 방문객의 이름에서 빌려왔다고 한다. 두장의 라이센스를 비롯해 (“Kaatu", "Magentalane") 이들이 발표한 다섯장의 앨범은 너무나 유명해 앨범 리뷰는 간단히 소개만 하는 정도에서 그치겠다. Kaatu 76년 8월에 공개 되었던 동명 타이틀의 데뷔작은 전세계적으로 200만장에 육박하는 판매고를 기록했던 밀리언 셀러였다. 후에 Carpenters가 리바이벌했던 ‘Calling Occupants Of Interplanatery Craft'를 비롯해 일본에서 대단한 인기를 모았던 ’Sub-Rosa Subway', 지구의 감동적인 대서사시 ‘Little Neutrino'등 밝고 경쾌한 곡으로 가득한 앨범이다. Klaatu의 마스코트로 인식되어 온 생쥐에 대한 재미있는 에피소드가 있다. 이들이 데뷔 앨범의 녹음 작업을 끝내고 최종 마무리로 ‘Little Neutrino'를 체킹하는 도중 ’찍‘gksms 히스음이 들렸다고 한다. 이 잡음이 마치 생쥐가 ’찍찍‘ 대는 소리와 같다는 생각에 그래픽 디자이너로 활동중이었던 Ted Jones가 이들의 앨범에 생쥐를 그려 넣었다고 한다. 이때부터 생쥐는 이들 팀의 이미지 메이킹에 있어서 중요한 역할을 하기에 이른다. Hope 데뷔작의 성공에 고무된 이들은 2집이자 이들 최고의 명반인 “Hope"의 제작을 위해 영국 런던으로 건너갔다. 98인조의 대규모 런던 심포니 로케스트라와 함께 만들었던 2집 대부분의 앨범에 대한 컨셉트는 John Woloschuk의 아이디어였다. 한편의 대하드라마를 연상시키는 이 작품으로 Klaatu는 국내 아트락 매니아들에게는 잊혀질 수 없는 그룹으로 자리매겨지기에 이른다. Sir Army Suit 78년에 공개된 이 작품을 끝으로 Klaatu는 더 이상 아트록 그룹으로서의 생명력을 잃기에 이른다. 팝 그룹으로 전락한 이들의 사운드를 3집에서는 여실히 들을수 있다. Endangered Species 1~3집까지의 제작을 맡았던 Terry Brown이 John Woloshuk과의 의견 대립으로 떠나게 되자 이들은 새 앨범 제작을 위해 미국의 L.A.로 건너가 Christopher를 만나 4집 앨범 제작에 참여한다. 스튜디오 뮤지션을 동원해 만들었던 이 작품은 더 이상의 기대가 무용지물임을 보여주었던 그저 평범한 사운드로 가득한 앨범이었다. 이들은 이 앨범 발매후 2년에 걸친 캐나다 투어 공연의 장정에 올라선다. 80년도 작품. 영국 ART ROCK의 역사 제9회 VI. Progressive Rock의 내용 1. 앨범 제목 및 전체적인 Concept의 주체(그룹과 아티스트에게 커다란 영향을 미친 작다들과 작품들 그리고 인물들...) 소설이나 시와 같은 문학작품들은 가수들 작곡가들과 잓사가들에게 많은 영향을 주어왔다. 타 장르보다도 특히, Art Rock Progressive Rock게열의 그룹들과 아티스트들은 이러한 문학작품들에 지대한 영향을 받았다(여기에 소개되는 작가들과 작품들은 일부분에 지나지 않으며 대표적인 것들을 요약, 소개한다.) 지난 8회에서 Progressive Rock의 형식에 대하여 다루었고, 이번에는 그 내용에 대하여 보다 심층적으로 분석하여 본다. 그동안 Progressive Rock의 내용들을 여러 차례 분석해왔지만 이번의 경우는 이전과 현저한 차이점이 있다. 지금까지는 한 나라에 국한된 것이 아니라, 전 세계의 총체적인 Progressive Rock의 내용을 다루어 왔기 때문에 간략한 설명과 해설로서도 충분했다. 그러나, 이 지면에서는 종주국인 영국의 Progressive Rock들에 담겨져 있는 내용들을 중점적으로 다루려고 하는 만큼 보다 심층적인 분석이 요구되는 것이다. 먼저 이 방대한 작품들 속에서 어떤 것을 선택하여, 어떻게 분석할 것이냐라는 문제에 직면하게 되었고 결국, 지면과 시간적인 문제로 인해 가장 대표적인 샘플들을 선정하기로 했다. 우선, Progressive Rock의 내용을 크게 세 개의 부류로 나누어 분석하게 되었는데 1) 앨범 제목 및 전체적인 Concept의 주체, 2) 가사내용, 3) 그룸명 등으로 나누어 분석을 하게 되었다. 또한 앨범 제목과 전체적인 Concept의 중요성은 앞에서 여러차례 언급한 바 있다. Alice's Adventures In Wonderland : 영국작가 Lewis Carroll의 1865sus 작품, dfnl에게는 “이상한 나라의 엘리스”라는 제목으로 알려져 있으며 Charisma레이블의 이미지 케릭터로 사용되었고, Anni Haslam의 솔로앨범 Annie In Wonderland에서는 앨범 타이틀로서 뿐만 아니라 커버아트까지 Alice's Adventures In Wonderland의 캐릭터들을 담고 있다. 또한 Jefferson Airplane의 히트 곡 White Rabbit은 Alice를 지하세계로 이끌고 가는 캐릭터이기도 하다. 그룹 Mock Turtles도 이 소설로부터 그룹명을 가져왔다. 그 외에 많은 그룹들이 Lewis Carroll의 작품에서 그룹명과 앨범명을 채택했을 때, 그의 1872년 소설 Through The Looking-Glass가 탄생했고, Siouxsie And Banshees의 1987년앨범 Through The Looking-Glass도 바로 Lewis Carroll의 1872년 소설러부터 비롯되었다. Gentle Giant의 “In A Glass House도 역시 마찬가지...” All About Eve : Joseph L. Mankiewicz에게 “Best Picture”부문 아카데미상을 안겨다 준, 1950년 미국영화 Bette Davis가 노련한 여배우 Margo Channing으로, Anne Baxter가 Eve로 열연하고 있으며 어린 모습의 Marlilyn Monroe의 모습도 보인다. Autobiography Of A Super-Tramp : 영국의 소설가 W.H. Davis의 1908년 소설 Autobiography Of A Super-Tramp는 Supertramp의 그룹명으로 채택되었다. Johann Sebatian Bach : 독일의 작곡가, 그의 Toccata And Fugue In D Minor는 Progressive Rock팀들의 인기 아이템... Gracious의 Fugun In D Minor 등등... 더 열거하면 지면 낭비! 그의 Cantata 및 여러 작품들이 자주 도입 되었다. Bible : 인류 역사상 최고의 Best-Seller, 성경은 역시 그룹들과 아티스트들이 가장 많이 인용하는 최고의 문헌. Peter Gabriel의 Genesis도 Arthur Brown의 Kingdom Come도 성경으로부터 비롯된 이름이다. 이태리의 Latte E Miele까지도... Brave New World : 영국 작가. Aldous Huxley의 1932년도 소설로 Strawbs가 Grave new World라는 앨범 제목으로 사용한 바 있으며, 이에 앞서 1969년 Steve Miller가 앨범명으로 채택한 바 있다. 또한 Aldous Huxley의 소설 The Doors Of Perception(1954년, William Blake의 싯구에서 비롯된 제목)은 Jim Morrison의 그룹명 The Doors를 탄생시켰다. Emily Bronte : 영국 여류작가. 19세기 Yorkshire의 3명의 자매 여류작가들중의 한명으로 그녀의 최고의 작품으로 알려진, 1847년에 출판된 Wuthuring Height는 Genesis의 앨범 Wind And Wuthuring(1976년)과 Kate Bush의 1976년도 노래의 제목으로 사용됨. Willam Burroughs : 많은 Rock그룹들이 미국작가인 William Burroughs에게 신세를 졌다고해도 과언이 아니다. Progressive Rock계에서, 가장 대표적인 예가 Soft Machine이다 Soft Machine은 그의 1961년 소설인 The Soft Machine을 그대로 그룹명으로 채택했다. David Bowie를 비롯 The Heavy Metal Kids, U2(아일랜드), Duran Duran등의 영국계 그룹들과 아티스트들 뿐만 아니라 Steppenwolf등 많은 미국 그룹들과 Laurie Anderson등 여러 미국 아티스트들에게도 William Burroughs의 작품들과 정신세계는 커다란 영향을 미쳤다. Arthur C. Clarke : 미국작가. 그의 1968년 공상과학 소설 “2001년:A Space Odyssey"는 같은해 Stanley Kubrick의 영화로 만들어졌고. 그 이듬해 David Bowie의 Space Oddity에 커다란 영감을 주었다. 그밖에 여러 Space Music그룹들에 영향을 주었다는 사실은 의심할 여지가 없다. Aron Copland : 미국 작고가. 그의 Fanfare For The Common Man은 Emerson Lake & Palmer 및 많은 Progressive Rock그룹들의 Live Opening곡으로 사용됨. Salvador Dali : 스페인 초현실주의 화가. 그의 꿈같은 풍경화와 신비로운 모티브들, 특히 녹아내리는 둥근 벽시계등은 많은 Progressive Rock그룹들의 초현실적인 커버아트에 커다란 영향을 주었다. 특히, Pink Floyd의 Time에 사용되었던 Animation과 Roger Dean등 커버 아티스트들의 Coloring에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤다. Charles Dickens : 19세기 영국작가. 그의 작품 David Copperfield(1849~1850)의 등장인물 Uriah Heep은 그룹명이 되었다. Dies Irae(Day Of Wrath) : “노한 날”. The Enid의 The Last Judgement Day 또는 The Last Day. Graciou의 Hell등으로 편곡되어 연주된 기존 선율, 유럽의 많은 Progressive Rock 그룹들이 데뷔앨범의 작품으로 즐겨 도입한 명작. East Of Eden : John Steinbeck의 1952년 소설. 1955년 James Dean주연, Elia kazan 감독의 영화로 만들어졌고 이 영화는 결국, 그룹 East Of Eden을 탄생시켰다. kenneth Grahame : 영국작가. 그의 1908년 작품 “The Wind In The Willows”dml 한 부분은 제목은 “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn"이며, 이 제목은 1967년 Pink Floyd의 데뷔앨범 타이틀이 되었다. Edvard Greig : 노르웨이 작곡가. 그의 1867년 조곡, Peer Gynt는 Henrik Ibsen의 In The Hall Of Moutain King이라는 사연극의 기초가 되었고, 이 제목은 King Crimson의 데뷔앨범의 타이틀에 영향을 주었다. Henrik Ibse : 노르웨이 극작가. 그의 연극 A Doll's House(1879년)는 Family의 1968년 앨범 Music In A Doll's House에 영감을 주었다. Jack kerouac : 미국 소설가. 이 Beat계열의 작가의 소설들은 Rock문화에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 1940년대를 그린 그의 대표작 On The Road(1957년 출간됨)은 Traffic의 1973년 라이브 앨범의 타이틀이 되었으며, Bad Company의 Desolatio Angels는 그의 1965년에 cfv나된 소서러로 비롯된 제목이다. 그 외에 taksg은 alrr 그룹들과 영국 그룹들이 그의 소설에 강한 영향을 받았다. Aram Khachaturia : 러시아 작곡가. 그의 Sabra Dance는 Love Sculpture의 1968년 버전 Qs만 아니라 많은 Progressive Rock그룹들의 주요 멜로디로 사용되었다. Roland Kirk : 미국의 Jazz뮤지션. 섹소폰 주자, Rip Rig & Panic은 그의 1965년 앨범 타이틀을 그룹명으로 내 걸었다. The League Of Gentlemen : Basil Dearden의 1961년 영국 영화. 이 제목은 King Crimson의 리더 Robert Fripp의 순회공연 팀의 그룹명이 되었으며, 같은 이름의 Best 앨범의 제목이 되었다. Gaston Leroux : 프랑스 작가. 그의 소설 The Phantom Of The Opera는 Andrew Lloyd Webber의 뮤지컬의 타이틀이 되었다. Sir Thomas Malory : 15세기 영국작가. 1485년에 출판된 그의 “The Death Of Arthur"는 Arthur왕에 대한 여러 가지 주요 전설들을 모아놓은 모음집으로 이 작품은 Rick Wakeman의 앨범 ”the Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table"의 Source가 되었다. Marx Brothers : 미국 코미디 팀. 이 코메디 팀의 두 영화 “A Night At The Opera(1935년)와 A Day At The Race(1937년)”가 Queen의 앨범 타이틀이 되었다. Herman Melville : 미국 작가. 그의 1851년 고전 Moby-Dick은 미국 그룹 Moby Grape의 그룹명으로 그리고 Bob Dylan의 노래 Lo And Behold에 거대한 고래로서 등장한다. 특히 Led Zeppelin으 Moby Dick과 Tom Waits의 1974년 노래 Shiver Me Timebers는 이 소설과 결코 무관하지 않다. Michael Moorcock : 영국 작가. 많은 SF소설을 써왔던 그는 영국의 Space Rock그룹 Hawkwind의 파트 타임 멤버로 활약하기도 했다. Hawkwind는 SF소설의 테마를 즐겨 사용하는 그룹으로 그들의 1975년 앨범 Warrios On The Edge Of Time에 이 소설가의 목소리를 들을 수 있다. 1976년 그는 Hawkwind로부터 영감을 얻은 Time Of The Hawkwind라는 소설을 발표했고, Hawklords는 Hawkwind의 후신그룹의 그룹명으로 사용되기도 했다. Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky : 러시아 작곡가. 그의 피아노 곡 “Pictures At An Exhibition(1874년)”은 Emerson Lake & Palmer에 의해 재해석되어 1971년의 앨범 타이틀이 되었다. 또한 오케스트라곡 “Night On The Bare Mountain(1867년)”은 많은 Progressive Rock그룹들이 Rock으로 편곡하여 즐겨 연주해왔던 인기 작품이다. Friendrich Nietzche : 독일 철학가. 그의 “Also Sprach Zarathustra(짜라투스트라는 이렇게 말했다)”는 Progressive rock그룹들이 자주 도입하는 테마. 또한 그의 1886년 작품 “Beyond Good And Evil"은 그룹 Pop Group의 1979년 싱글 ‘She Is Beyond Good And Evil'에 영향을 주었고 그의 Bermensch(Superman)이론은 미국의 laurie Anderson에게 ’O Superman(1981년)‘dlfksms 곡을 낳게했다. George Orwell : dudrnr 작가. 그는 Rock Music에 가장 커다란 영향을 준 작가라고 말할 수 있다. Pink Floyd의 Animals앨범은 그의 동물농장에서 영감을ㅇ 얻었으며, 특히 그의 1949년 소설 “1984'는 Rock계 뿐만 아니라 Progressive Rock계에 지대한 영향을 주었다. Rick Wakeman의 앨범 ”1984“와 Soft Machine의 멤버 Hugh Hopper의 데뷔솔로 앨범 타이틀 역시 ”1984“였다. David Bowie의 Diamond Dogs앨범은 George Orwell의 소설 ”1984“dmf 반영한 작품으로, 타이틀을 그대로 사용하려 했지만 작가로부터 허락을 받아내지 못했다. The Eurythmics의 싱글 Sexcrime(Nineteen Eighty-For) 역시 이 소설의 ”범죄적인 공격“을 반영하고 있다. Terry Pratchett : 영국 SF작가. 널리 읽히고 있는 SF인기 작가. 그의 Discworld는 1993년 Dave Greenslade의 앨범 “From The Discworld"에 영감을 주었으며 작가 자신이 직접 이 프로젝트에 참여했다. Quatermass : 영국 TV 드라마. 공상과학 씨리즈물로 그룹 Quatermass를 탄생시켰다. Nickolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov : 러시아 작곡가. 그의 여왕벌의 비행 “The Flight Of The Bumble Bee"은 EL&P의 Live무대에서 자주 연주되었고, Gun의 데뷔앨범에서도 들을 수 있다. 그 외에 많은 Progressive Rock작품에서 도입되어 있다. 또한 그의 Sheherazade는 Anni Haslam의 그룹 Renaissance의 1975년도 4번째 앨범 ”Sheherazade And Other Stories"의 타이틀로 사용되었다. Jean-Paul Sartre : 프랑스 작가. 그의 작품 In Comera는 1974년 Pete Hammill의 솔로앨범의 타이틀로 사용되었다. William Skakespeare : 영국의 극작가. 그의 작품들은 일반 Pop, Rock그룹들 뿐만 아니라 Progressive Rock그룹들의 가사에 영감을 주거나 자주 인용되었다. Rmeo And Juliet은 Dire Straits를 비롯한 영국그룹은 물론이요, 미국의 Lou Reed, Blue Oyster Cult, Bruce Springsteen등의 가사에서 흘러 나온다. Skakespeare의 비극 Hamlet 역시 즐겨 사용되었는데 B.A. Roberston의 노래 “To Be Or Not To Be"를 비로 심지어 이태리 그룹 New Trolls의 Adagio는 Hamlet III막 1장에 나오는 ”To Die, To Sleep, Perchance To Dream"을 가사로 채택하고 있다. Peter Hammill의 Ophelia도 마찬가지며, Wallenstein의 Shakesparesque에 이르기까지... Athur Sullivan : 영국 작곡가. 그의 오케스트라 작품 “The Lost Chord"는 Moody Blues의 In Search of The Lost Chord에 영감을 주었다. Dylan Thomas : dudrnr 시인. 그의 “목소리를 위한 연극(1954년), Under Milk Wood"에 나오는 Starless And Bible Black은 King Crimson의 1974년 앨범의 제목이 되었다. J.R.R. Tolkien : 남아프리카 태생의 영국 작가. 1937년 그가 출발한 Fantasy스토리 The Hobbit과 1950년 중반에 3권으로 출반된 작품은 “The Lord Of The Rings"를 포함하고 있다. 이 제목은 스웨덴 뮤지션 Bo Hansen의 앨범 제목이 되기도 했다. ”The Lord Of The Rings"에 나오는 Gandalf의 말은 후에 Shadowfax의 그룹명이 되었고, Pink Fairies와 Marillion의 원래의 그룹명은 Tolkien의 대포(Cannon)이름인 Silmarillion이었다. The War Of The Worlds : 영국 작가 H.G.Wells의 1898년 소설. 1953년 Byron Haskin감독에 의해서 S.F.영화로 만들어졌고 그후 Jeff Wayne의 Rock Musical이 되었다. The Wizard Of Oz : 1939년 Victor Fleming이 감독했던 미국영화. World Of Oz의 그룹명과 Elton John의 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road에 영감을 주었다. 2. 가사내용 Progressive Rock에 있어서 가사는 그렇게 중요하지 않게 여겨진다. 물론, 이러한 평간느 그 자체의 연주와 가사를 대비한 것이지, 타 장르의 가사와 비교한 것은 결코 아니다. 즉, Progressive Rock은 가사를 통해 Message를 전달하는 것보다 연주 자체나 타이틀 제목, 그리고 앨범 제목으로 Message를 전달한다. 따라서 타 장르, 특히 기존 Rock이나 Pop Music에 비해 연주가 노래(가사)나 Pop Music에 비해 연주가 노래(가사)보다 지배적으로 많다. 그러나 표현하고자 하는 의도나 목적이, 연주만으로는 도저히 해결하기 힘들 경우 가사를 도입한다. Progressive Rock그룹이나 아티스트들은 대부분 철학적인 것, 초현실적인 것(공상적-낭만적인 것), 서정적인 것, 반사회적인 것, 저항(반항)적인 것, 종교적인 것 그리고 아무 의미없는 형태(Chorus, Scat, Shout, Dialogue, Monologue, Noise, Voice Effect 그리고 침묵-Silence 등등...)로도 삽입되어 있다. A. 철학적인 가사 당연한 것같지만, 대부분의 리드 보컬리스트가 그룹의 작시를 해왔던 것이 사실이다. Emerson Lake & Palmer의 Greg Lake, Yes의 Jon anderson, Genesis의 Peter Gabriel, Van Der Graaf Generator의 Peter Hammill, Jethro Tull의 Ian Anderson, 중후반기 Pink Floyd의 Roger Waters등이 대표적이다. 1970년대 초중반 Peter Gabriel은 미국 시인 T.S. Elliot의 시에 심취해 있었고 앨범 “Selling England By Wasteland에 강하게 영향을 받았다. 또한 Jon Anderson은 독일의 작가 Hermann Hesse의 열렬한 팬이었고 앨범 ”Close To The Edge"는 이러한 사실을 여실히 드러내고 있다. 물론, Progressive Rock계에는 연주인은 아니지만 작시가로서 그룹에 참가했던 전문 작사가들이 있었다. 그들중 대표적인 인물로는 King Crimson의 작시가 Peter Sinfield와 Renaissance의 Betty Thatcher 그리고 Procol Harum의 keith Reid등을 손꼽을 수 있다. 이들은 결코 연주인들이 엄두를 낼 수 없을 만큼 심오하고 깊이 있는 가사들을 창조해 내었다. Epitaph : Peter Sinfield(King Crimson) Knowledge is a deadly friend If no one sets the rules The fate of all mankind I see Is in the hands of fools 아무도 규칙을 정하지 않았을 때, 지식은 치명적인 친구이다. 내가 알고 있는 인류의 운명은 바보들에 손안에 있는 것이다. Ashes Are Burning : Betty Thatcher(Renaissance) Follow the dying embers Cross on the paths that they lay Breath of the past the earths yesterday Colours are fading starlight Silver the way to find Walk in the shadows, there in our mind 타다 남은 죽음의 재들을 따라 그것들이 뿌려져 있는 오솔길을 가로지른다. 지난날의 숨결, 과거의 토양(또는 속된일)들 색깔들이 별빛으로 변하고 있다. 찾을 수 잇는 길을 은빛으로 입혀라... 바로 그곳에 우리들의 정신이 있다. 위의 가사들은 결코 번역하기가 쉽지 않다. 시적이면서도 매우 철학적이기 때문이다. 부드러운 시가 아니라 매우 자극적이고 거칠며 명령조이다. 명령의 주체는 제 3인칭의 인물(절대자)이면서 또한 1인칭의 정신적인 지주이기도 하다. 전체적인 의미는 과거(죽음의 재)의 속박으로부터 자유롭게 벗어나라!는 철학적인 의미를 담고 있다. In Held Twas in I / Keith Reid(Procol Harum) Some Say That I'm Wise man Some Think I'm a Fool It Doesn't Matter Either Way I'll Be A Wise Man's Fool. "몇몇 사람들은 나를 현명한 자라고 말한다. 또 몇몇 사람들은 내가 바보라고 생각한다. 하지만 나는 상관하지 않겠다. 나는 현명한 자이면서 바보(바보인척 하는 현명한자)가 되겠다.“ 인간의 순수철학에서 비롯된 keith Reid의 시적 감각이 돋보이는 구절이다. B. 초현실적인 가사, 공상적인 가사 (Surrealistic, Romantic And Sci-Fi Lyrics) 1967년 Pink Floyd의 데뷔앨범에는 양면의 첫곡으로 Astronomy Domine과 Interstellar Overdrive가 수록되어 있다. 그러나 이 두작품들은 가사보다는 사운드를 중시한 것들이었다. 그후 1년뒤인 1968년 David Bowie는 Space Oddity라는 곡으로 가사와 사운드가 완벽하게 조화된 Space Rock을 창조해 내었다.(인류가 최초로 달에 발을 딛은 1969년 앨범타이틀로 발표되었다.) And I think my spaceship knows which way to go... 지상 관제탑에서 우주선 선정 톰에게... 단백질 알약을 투여하고 당신의 헬멧을 착용하라. 카운트다운을 개시하고 엔진을 켜라. 점화장치를 확인하고... 신의 가호가 당신과 함께 하기를... 나는 기내에서 기묘하게 떠다니고 있습니다... 별들이 오늘 새롭게 보이는군요. 혹성 지구는 프른 빛이고, 나는 수십만마일을 지나왔습니다.... 우주선이 가야 할 방향을 알고 있는 것 같군요. 그후 1970년, Space Rock그룹 Hawkwin가 출범했고, 이들은 공상과학 소설과 Michael moorcok(위 참조)까지 영입시켜 본격적인 Space Rock의 세계를 펼쳤다. 또한 Gracious의 두 번째 앨범도 새로운 Space Rock의 장을 열었고, Arthur Brown이 이끌었던 Kingdom Come도 Vincent Price의 영화를 뮤지컬형식으로 각색한 Galacitc Zoo Dossier(1971년)을 데뷔앨범으로 발표, 이색적인 Space Rock의 세계를 펼쳤다. 그 외에 핵 융합을 상징하는 “H To He 쫴 Am The Only One"이라는 타이틀로써 발표되었던 Van Der Graaf Generator의 세 번째 앨범에는 ”Pioneer Over C(광속으로 우주를 여행하는 우주 비행사의 극한 상태에서의 고독감을 Space Rock으로 표출한 이색작, 1970년)‘fksms 곡이 수록되어 있으며, Emerson Lake & Palmer의 Infinite Space(1971년), Yes의 Starship Trooper(1971년), Genesis의 Watchers Of The Sky(1972년)등등 엄청난 분량의 Space Rock이 1970년대 초반에 발표되었다. C. 반 사회적인 것, 저항적인 것(Counterculture, Rebel And Protest Lyrics) 많은 사람들이 Progressive Rock의 가사들은 초현실주의와 공상적인 것, 철학적이고 종교적이며 그리고 신화와 전설만을 담은 시집이나, 신화, 그리고 동화책 정도로만 간주한다. 물론 이러한 가사들이 주종을 이루고 있는 것이 사실이지만 저항적이며, 반 사회적인요소도 어렵지 않게 찾아 볼 수 있다. 이러한 저항적인 가사에 강하게 영향을 주었던 작가들로는 Geoge Orwell과 Aldus Huxley 그리고 T.S. Eliot등이 있다. Animals/Roger Waters(Pink Floyd) Roger Wates가 Pink Floyd의 리더로써 부각되기 시작했던 1977년 앨범 Animals는 George Orwell의 동물농장(Animals Farm)을 기초로 사회를 비판하고 있다. 물론, 동물농장을 충실히 반영시킨 것은 아니지만 가사의 등장인물이 바로 동물농장의 주요 캐릭터들이다. Pigs(폭군들, 경찰), Dogs(폭력적이고 권력에 굶주린 배후 조정인물) 그리고 Sheep(어리석은 추종자들)이 이 앨범에 등장한다. Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 Pink Floyd는 Animals앨범 이전에 이미 사회비판적인 작품들을 The Dark Side Of The Moon(1973년)에 수록하고 있다. 비인간적이고 인간들을 미치게 만드는 현대 산업사회, 조직사회에 대한 강한 반발을 Time과 On The Run(시간에 의해 움직이는 기계 인간), Money(돈-물질에 노예가 되어 버린 인간), 그리고 Us And Them(전쟁과 폭력 속의 인간들-우리 모두)으로써 표출해 내었다. 그후 6년이 지난뒤, Roger Waters는 인간과 인간사이의 장벽(The Wall)으로 보다 구체적인 현대인들의 문제점을, Pink라는 자신의 모습을 통하여 심리적으로, 심층적으로 다루게 된다. We don't need no education. We don't need no thought control. No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Teacher, leave those kids alone. Hey, Teacher, leave those kids alone! All in all it's just another brick in the wall. All in all you're just another brick in the wall. 우리는 교육이 필요치 않아요. 우리는 사상통제를 원치 않아요. 교실에는 음흉한 야유가 없어야 해요. 선생이여... 우리 어린이들을 내버려 두어요.(반복) 모든 것이 장벽 속의 또 하나의 벽돌일 뿐입니다. 당신들 모두 장벽 속의 또하나의 벽돌일 뿐입니다. 3. 그룹명(Group Name) Progressive Rock그룹들의 그룹명은 그들이 행하는 음악과 결코 무관하지 않다. 그룹명을 앨범의 타이틀(주로 데뷔앨범에)로 사용하거나 더 나아가서 곡 제목으로도 사용하기도 한다. 특히 전설과 신화(Legend, Mythology, Fantasy) 그리고 문학작품(소설, SF등), 역사적 인물이나 사물들을 그룹명은 신중하게 고려되어 지어지기도 하지만, 때로는 즉흥적으로 만ㄷ르어지기도 하였다. Amazing Blondel : 튜더(Tudor)왕가시대와 중세시대의 음악을 도입한 이색적인 Folk Rock그룹으로 그룹명 자체가 이들의 음악 스타일을 암시하고 있다. 이들의 그룹명은 중세시대의 프랑스 서정시인, 음유시인 Blondel De Nesle에서 비롯되었다. Art Of Noise : 이태리의 미래학자 Luigi Russolo의 L'Arte Dei Rumori에서 그룹명을 가져왔다. ATF(After The Fire) : 크리스챤 Pomp 깨차그룹으로 최후 심판의 날, 지옥처럼 불타오르는 세상을 묘사한 그룹명을 내걸었다. Auto Da Fe : 13세기부터 19세기 사이의 스페인과 포르투갈에 있었던 종교재판소를 그룹명으로 내걸은 Folk Rock그룹, 노벨상을 수상한 불가리아 태생의 작가 Elias Cannetti의 1966년 소설의 제목이기도 하다. Barclay James Harvest : Label특집 “Harvest편”dptj 언급했던 것처럼 Harvest라는 Progressive Rock레이블의 성격을 나타내는 그룹명이다. Bauhaus : Water Gropius에 의해 설립되었던 독일의 건축, 예술 디자인 전문 학교 이름을 그룹명으로 채택했다. CCS : Collective Consciousness Society의 약어로 Alexis Korner의 대규모 프로젝트 그룹이었다. Led Zeppelin의 Whole Lotta Love를 Brass Rock으로 편곡, 이 곡은 영국 TV챠트 쇼 Top Of The Pops의 시그널 뮤직으로 사용되어 널리 알려졌다. Clannad : 아일랜드의 Folk그룹으로 가족들에 의해서 결성되었기 때문에 게일어(아일랜드 켈트어)로 “가족”이라는 뜻의 단어를 그룹명으로 채택했다. Comus : 그리스-로마 신화에 나오는 음주, 향연을 주관하는 젊은신이름 Curved Air : 현대 음악가 Terry Riley의 앨범 “Rainbow In Curved Air"로부터 비롯되었다. Dada : 20세기 초기의 에술-문학상의 전위주의-예술운동, 그룹 Cabaret Voltaire(1979년 데뷔)는 다다이즘 예술가들이 모여 토론하던 명소로 스위스 Zurich의 술집을 그룹명으로 내걸었다. Deviants : 후에 Rock평론가, 공상과학 소설가로 활약하게 되는 Mick Farren이 재적했던 팀이다. Mick Farren은 당시 언더그라운드 신문에 정치적인 기사들을 실었고, 그들의 그룹 이름은 사회에 반발하는 “사회의 상식, 습관에서 벗어난 사람들”이라는 뜻을 지니고 있다. East Of Eden : 성경에 나오는 Cain과 Abel의 이야기를 기초로 쓰여졌던 John Steinbeck의 1952년 소설을 그룹명으로 채택한 그룹 ELO : 우리에게 잘알려진 Electric Light Orchestra는 전기 불빛(Electric Light) + 가벼운 음악(Light Music)의 합성어로 그룹명을 지었다. 그러나, 전신그룹 The Move보다 진지하고 신중한 음악을 펼치게 된다. The Enid : 리더 Robert Godfrey가 다녔던 Finchden Manor학교의 농담에서 발췌한 이름. Fairport Convention : Fairport는 Simon Nicol(Vocal, Guitar)의 고향. Fortheringay : Fairport Convention을 떠난 후 Sandy Denny가 결성한 그룹으로 그녀의 노래 Ma교, Queen Of Scots' Imprisonment In Fotheringay Castle에서 그룹명을 가져왔다. The Groundhogs : 원래 그룹명은 John Lee's Groundhogs로 Groundhogs(북미의 설치동물:다람쥐과로 Woodchuck으로 알려짐)를 노래했던 Blues Musician, John Hooker를 기리는 뜻으로 그룹명르 지었다. Gryphon : Griffon. 그리스신화에 나오는 독수리 머리와 날개, 사자의 몸통을 가진 가상의 동물이름을 그룹명으로 채택한 중세 민속음악을 행하는 그룹. Hatfield & The North : Art Rock Chamber, 런던에서 영국 북쪽으로 빠져나가기 위해 타게되는 A 1 고속도로의 첫 번째 신호판을 그룹명으로 채택했다. Idle Race : ELO의 리더격인 Jeff Lynne 이 재적했던 그룹으로 원래의 그룹명은 The Nightriders였으나 싱글 “Idle Race"를 발표한 후 그룹명을 싱글 타이틀로 바꾸었다. Isotope : Gary Boyle의 그룹으로, 화학적 용어인 “동위원소”를 그룹명으로 채택. Jethro Tull : 18세기 영국에서 “씨를 뿌리는 작은 고랑(조파기)”을 발명한 농지 발명가의 이름. Kaleidoscope : 만화경을 그룹명으로 채택한 영국 Folk Rock그룹, 1960년대 Psychedelic을 행했던 같은 이름의 미국그룹도 있었다. King Crimson : 노르웨이 작곡가 Edvard Grieg의 1867년 조곡 Peer Gynt(이태리 그룹 Buon Vecchio Charlie등 많은 Art Rock 그룹들이 음악적 소재로 사용했던 곡)는 Henrik Isben의 드라마 “In The Hall Of The Mountain King"을 기초로 하고 있는데 이 제목은 King Crimson의 데뷔앨범 In The Court Of Crimson King의 제목의 기초를 이루고 있으며 그룹명 King Crimson을 탄생시켰다. kingdom Come : Arthur Brown의 두 번째 그룹의 그룹명은 사후세계를 반영하는 종교적 구절에서 비롯되었다. Leviathan : 영국을 비롯, 미국, 이태리 등등 많은 나라의 Progressive Rock그룹들이 즐겨 그룹명으로 채택했던 이 단어는 많은 의미를 담고 있다. 먼저, 성서에 나오는 거대한 전설적인 바다의 짐승이었으며 그후 고래나 악어를 묘사할 때 이 단어를 쓰기 시작했다. 또한 무서운 물체를 표현할 때 일반적으로 사용되었으며, 17세기 철학자 Thomas Hobbes는 자신의 논문에서 정부를 Leviathan으로 부르기도 했다. Lindisfame : Newcastle출신의 그룹으로 7세기 이후 수도원이 있어왔던, Holy Island라고도 부르는 곳의 부근에 있는 섬 이름을 그룹명으로 채택했다. Manfred Mann : 리더 Michael Lubitsch의 가명을 그룹명으로 내세웠다. Marillion : 원래 J.R.R. Tolkien의 공상과학소설로부터 Silmarillion라는 이름을 채택햇으나 데뷔앨범을 발표하기 직전 그룹명을 짤막하게 Marillion으로 축소했다. Moody Blues : 초창기 이들은 그룹명을 M & B라고 불렀는데, 그 이유는 영국 aoor주 양조회사 Mitchell & Butler의 후원을 받고 있었기 때문이다. 그후 이축약어는 본래의 의미와 상반되는, 친근한 음악적 용어 Blues에 Moody 라는 단어가 자연스럽게 얹어졌다. 이들은 초창기에 Blues를 행했기 때문에 그룹명에 Blues가 덧붙혀진 것은 매우 당연한 것처럼 여겨졌다. Mott The Hoople : 미국 작가 Willard Manus의 1967년 소설 제목을 그룹명으로 채택했다. National Health : 영국의 공영 건강 서비스(The British Public Health Service)를 그룹명으로 채택. Nirvana : "열반“이라는 불교용어를 사용한 Patrick Campbell-Lyons의 그룹, 후에 Curt Kobain도 이 그룹명을 사용했다. Pink Fairies : Marillion처럼 남아프리카 태생의 영국작가 J.R.R. Tolkien의 작품세계에서 그룹명을 가져왔다. Planxty : 이 그룹명은 게일 언어(Gaelic)로 누군가의 존경심에 의해 쓰여진 가곡을 의미한다. Procol Harum : 그룹의 작시가 keith Reid의 친구가 소유하고 있었던 짧고 푸른털을 지닌 버마산 숫고양이 이름ㅇ르 그룹명으로 채택했다. 라틴어로 “현상을 뛰어넘어(Beyond These Things, Beyond The Present)"라는 뜻을 갖고 있다. Quartermass : 1950년대 영국 TV공상 스릴러물 “The Quartermass Experiment"에서 구룹명을 채택. Quintessence : 자연의 4대 원소인 Earth, Fire, Water, Air에 덧붙여지는 제 5번째 원소를 의미하는 Fifth Essence에 해당하는 불어를 그룹명으로 채택. Renaissance : 문화, 예술 그리고 종교의 부활과 부흥을 의미하는 불어로 Keith Relf는 Rock음악에 이러한 운동이 일어나기를 희망했다. Rock에 Classic과 Folk을 새로운 언어로써 받아드리려는 그의 노력에 대한 상징으로 거창한 그룹명을 채택하게 된다. Roxy Music : 미국의 흥행사, 기업가인 Samuel L. Rothafel(Art Deco Cineam Chain을 만들었던 인물)의 별명 Roxyfmf 그룹명으로 채택했다. Soft Machine : 미국작가 William Burroughs의 1961년 소설 The Soft Machine으로부터 그룹명을 채택했다. Supertramp : 영국 작가, 시인 W.H. Davies가 1908년에 발간했던 책 “Autobiography Of A Super-Tramp"로부터 그룹명을 발췌했다. Tea And Symphony : Birmingham출신의 이 그룹은 Robert Anderson의 연극 “Tea And Symphony에서 그룹명을 가져왔다. 이 연극은 Vincente Minnelli 감독에 의해 1956년 영화로도 만들어졌는데 Deborah Kerr와 John Kerr 그리고 Lief Erickson이 열연하고 있다. 학생과 선생님의 아내와의 불륜, Homosexul등을 다룬 영화. Ultravox : 라틴어 두단어로 Ultra(초강력) +Vox(목소리) = 초강력 못로리를 의미. Van Der Graaf Generator : 물리학자이자 MIT공대의 교수인 Robert J. Van De Graaff가 발명한 정전기 발전 기기의 이름에서 발췌한 이름.
